Με επιτυχία ολοκληρώθηκε το  Διεθνές Συμπόσιο για την Πορνογραφία στην Αθήνα με θέμα «Globalisation Media and Adult/Sexual Content: Challenges to Regulation and Research -Athens 2008», το οποίο συνδιοργανώθηκε από το Τμήμα Επικοινωνίας και Μ.Μ.Ε. του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών σε συνεργασία με το Ινστιτούτο Σπουδών Επικοινωνίας του Πανεπιστημίου του Leeds και το Ινστιτούτο Οπτικοακουστικών Μέσων (Ι.Ο.Μ.). Η έναρξη των εργασιών πραγματοποιήθηκε τη Δευτέρα 29 Σεπτεμβρίου και ώρα 17:30 και η λήξη των εργασιών την Τρίτη 30 Σεπτεμβρίου και ώρα 20:00. Ο χώρος διεξαγωγής του Συμποσίου ήταν το Κέντρο Τύπου της Γενικής Γραμματείας Επικοινωνίας – Γενικής Γραμματείας Ενημέρωσης (Φραγκούδη 11 & Αλ. Πάντου , Καλλιθέα) και ήταν ανοικτό στο ευρύ κοινό.

Το Συμπόσιο που πραγματοποιήθηκε υπό την αιγίδα της Βρετανικής Ακαδημίας αποτελεί την πρώτη σε ελληνικό επίπεδο προσπάθεια ενίσχυσης της ερευνητικής ενασχόλησης των ακαδημαϊκών με το θέμα της πορνογραφίας. Επιπρόσθετα, αποτελεί την απαρχή της ανάπτυξης ενός κύκλου διεπιστημονικού διαλόγου με επόμενο σταθμό το Πανεπιστήμιο του Leeds το 2009.
Στόχος του Συμποσίου είναι η διάχυση της διεθνούς ακαδημαϊκής εμπειρίας και η προαγωγή ενός γόνιμου διάλογου γύρω από θέματα που αφορούν στη σύγχρονη παγκόσμια βιομηχανία πορνογραφίας, στις συνθήκες παραγωγής, διανομής και κατανάλωσης της, καθώς και στα ηθικά και νομικά ζητήματα που εγείρουν οι διαρκώς μεταβαλλόμενες έννοιες της δημόσιας σφαίρας και των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα, οι θεματικές ενότητες που παρουσιάστηκαν και αναλύθηκαν είναι :

2. The Political Economy of ‘Sexy’: Η πολιτική οικονομία της πορνογραφίας.
3. The cycle of Production/Consumption: Η πορνογραφία στο διαδίκτυο.
4. Cultures of Pornography- Pornography of Culture: Η πολιτισμική κουλτούρα της πορνογραφίας
5. Policy and Activism: Πολιτικές και ακτιβισμός για την πορνογραφία.
